Subaru Forester S1 1997-2002

In 1997 Subaru introduced us to their first SUV. This award winning SUV boasted numerous storage compartments, front seats with fold down arm rests, power steering, electric windows, electric mirrors, roomy cabin and more. It was initially released with a 2.0L SOHC engine with either 4 speed constant 4wd automatic transmission or 5 speed constant 4wd manual with Hi/Lo range. In late 1998 Subaru added the 2.0L DOHC Turbo model to the range with the choice of either 4 speed 4wd automatic transmission or 5 speed 4wd manual (single range). In late 1999 Subaru released the 2000 model with upgraded styling with a new front & rear end.

Subaru Forester S2 2002-2008

After their initial success with the 2.0L Forester, Subaru upped their game by releasing the 2nd generation Forester with a 2.5L SOHC engine for the X & XS models and a 2.5L DOHC Turbo engine for the XT models. With new body & styling, this model won many fans and is still quite commonly seen on the road today. Air conditioning became standard in this model with the XS & XT models receiving climate control A/C. Other standard features also included ABS breaking, power steering, electric mirrors, power windows, a multitude of compartments, drop down arms rests for the front seats (although these were only fitted in the first variation 2002-2005). Late 2005 saw the introduction of the MY06 models with an all new front and upgraded taillights, the XT Turbo model receiving Xenon headlamps with pop-up headlamps washers in the bumper. A limited number of XT models also received the VDC package (Vehicle Dynamics Control).

Subaru Forester S3 2008-2012

The 3rd generation Subaru Forester was released in late 2008 with an all-new larger cabin & new styling. Again, more awards! The Subaru Forester has moved on to become a mid-sized family SUV with all the great features of previous models. Now with VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) as standard and a 5-star safety rating. Building on the previous model’s engine & gearbox combinations, Subaru added a diesel variant with a 6-speed manual transmission & electric assisted steering while with the XT turbo model they added the “S” Edition variant with 5 speed auto transmission.

Subaru Forester S4 2012-2018

Subaru released the 4th generation Forester in 2012. Changes were made to their engine & drive train configurations with the FA20 Turbo & FB25 only available with CVT auto transmission. The diesel variant was initially only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox but in 2014 the option for a 4wd CVT transmission was added to the range. After being absent for 10 years in the Australian market, Subaru re-introduced the 2.0L petrol model Forester with a 6-speed manual 4wd transmission. All models had electric assisted power steering. Other options included “Eyesight” collision avoidance system, lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, power lift tailgate, dual zone climate control A/C and more.

Subaru Forester S5 2018-

In late 2018 Subaru released the 5th generation of the Forester fitted with the FB25 engine & 7 speed CVT auto 4wd transmission. This model is loaded with all the great safety features of the previous model and a 5-star ANCAP rating. In 2019 Subaru released a Hybrid variant with the FB20 engine & CVT auto 4wd. We have yet to see the return of the XT turbo variant with the new FA24 Turbo engine, currently only available in the new Outback XT. There are no diesel engine options with the EE20 diesel engine being dropped from the entire Subaru range.
