Subaru Impreza G1 1993-2000

In 1993, on the back of the popularity of the Subaru Liberty range, Subaru Australia made its entry into the small car market with the Impreza. The exceptional performance of the turbocharged Impreza WRX in the World Rally Championships helped drive sales in this model worldwide. The Impreza was initially offered with 1.6L and 1.8L engines for the LX and GX models, respectively, as well as a 2.0L turbo engine for the WRX. GX, RX & WRX models were fitted with electric mirrors & power windows as standard. Subsequent updates introduced the RX model with the WRX body kit and 2.0L SOHC non-turbo engine.

Subaru Impreza G2 2000-2007

Between late 2000 and early 2007, Subaru introduced three distinct variations of the same body style. The first, from 2000 to 2001, was known as the “Bug-Eye,” characterized by its prominent round headlights. This version offered engine choices including the EJ20 SOHC, EJ25 SOHC, or the EJ20 DOHC Turbo (WRX), with options for automatic or manual four-wheel drive. All models came with electric mirrors, power windows, air conditioning & power steering as standard with the top line models receiving options such as climate control climate control & full bucket seats. From 2002 to 2005, the front design underwent a significant overhaul, commonly referred to as the “Blob-Eye” or “Peanut-Eye.” Then, in late 2005, another substantial redesign emerged, termed the “Hawk-Eye” model. The base model continued to feature the dependable EJ20 SOHC engine, while the EJ25 SOHC was replaced by the EJ20 DOHC, and the WRX received the EJ255 DOHC Turbo engine.

Subaru Impreza G3 2007-2011

First introduced in late 2007, this new version of the Impreza was available exclusively as a hatchback. This compact vehicle offered more interior space compared to its predecessor and came standard with a 2.0L DOHC engine. The WRX was also launched solely as a hatchback, equipped with a 2.5L DOHC turbocharged engine. By late 2008, sedan models for both the Impreza and the Impreza WRX were made available. Major styling updates for the WRX occurred in late 2010, with the standard WRX featuring a wider wheelbase and body enhancements reminiscent of the STI, complete with flared wheel arches. Although production of the G3 Impreza ended in 2011, the G3 Impreza WRX remained in production until 2013, anticipating the debut of the all-new WRX, which was developed as a distinct model separate from its Impreza heritage.

Subaru Impreza G4 2011-2017

The design of the fourth generation Impreza started to resemble that of its larger counterpart, the Subaru Liberty. It offered several impressive features like blind spot monitoring and the “Eyesight” collision prevention system, along with a larger cabin, which allowed the Impreza to make its presence felt in the mid-size family car segment. Notably, this was the first generation of the Impreza that did not include a turbocharged engine option, as the WRX was now manufactured as a distinct model with its own unique body style. The manual version was equipped with a 6 speed manual gearbox whereas the automatic was fitted with a 6 speed CVT transmission.

Subaru Impreza G5 2017-2023

The fifth-generation Impreza has established itself solidly in the family car segment. Following the discontinuation of the Liberty range in 2019, the Impreza has become Subaru’s flagship model. Features include (some are optional) multi-media centre with Sat Nav and Apple Play / Android Play, single zone or dual zone climate control, VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control), blind spot detection, electric assist steering, collision avoidance, lane departure warning, tyre pressure monitoring & LED headlamps. The Australia delivered model is equipped with a 7-speed CVT automatic transmission and the ever-reliable FB20 engine.
