Subaru Liberty B1 1989-1994
In 1989 Subaru launched itself into the big league releasing it’s all new Liberty B1 family car range with a larger body, bigger engines (2.2L & 2.0L Turbo) & more options to replace the aging A series. Both 2WD & constant 4WD options were available with air suspension on the GX 4WD wagons. Air conditioning & power steering became standard with electric windows on the GX & RS variants and power mirrors as standard across the range. The new Liberty range received several Australian & overseas awards. All Australian models had electronic multi-point fuel injection whereas the overseas models were produced with 1.3L / 1.6L & 1.8L engine variants with carburettor or single point injection.

Subaru Liberty B2 1994-1998
In 1994 the Liberty received a facelift with a newer more rounded body shape with the same reliable EJ22 SOHC engine & all the same great features. Although Subaru produced a 2.0l twin-turbo variant it was not released in Australia. In 1996 they released the RX edition with a 2.5L EJ25 DOHC engine alongside the release of the new Outback variant.

Subaru Liberty B3 1998-2003
With the release of the all new Liberty body design, Subaru Australia opted for AWD across the range with no 2WD variations being offered in Australia and the re-introduction of a turbo charged variant in the form of the absolutely awesome twin-turbo B4. Power windows & power mirrors became standard with Climate Control Air conditioning as standard for the RX EJ25 SOHC & B4 EJ20 DOHC Twin-Turbo models. There were two options with the manual gearboxes, single range constant 4WD for the sedans & dual range (high/low) for the station wagons. As with the first generation B1 Liberty it received several major motoring awards both here in Australia and overseas.

Subaru Liberty B4 2003-2009
In late 2003 Subaru up the ante introducing a completely new body design with a multitude of engine options from the 2.0L SOHC all the way up to the 3.0L DOHC 6 cylinder including 2.5L turbo Sti & 3.0L Sti versions fitted with 6 speed manual gearboxes and Brembo brakes. The 2.5L EJ25 SOHC was to become the flagship engine for this model with the 2.0L SOHC engine being replaced in 2006 by the 2.0L DOHC engine. The B4 model was the first Subaru model to use can-bus communication system with the door locking & instrument panels being linked to the immobiliser system. # Note: – “B4” was all used as the designation for the B3 Twin-turbo model.

Subaru Liberty B5 2009-2014
2009 saw the introduction of the next generation Liberty with the flagship EJ25 SOHC engine being the mainstay for the range. Again, Subaru Australia opted for the bigger 2.5L engine in their GT-turbo model whereas the overseas variation mainly used the 2.0L turbo version. The 6 cylinder variant had a massive boost going from the 3.0L in the previous model to a 3.6L EZ36 engine. 2009 also saw the introduction of the CVT auto transmission in their EJ25 SOHC & FB25 DOHC models. New safety features including the “Eyesight” camera system were fitted to the top line models.

Subaru Liberty B6 2014-2019
The end of the line. This was the last of Subaru’s flagship family car to be produced with only two engine options available, the 2.5L FB25 DOHC or the 3.6L EZ36. Both variants only available with CVT automatic transmission. Top of the range models received lane departure warning, blind spot detection, collision avoidance system, Subaru’s “Eyesight” system & LED headlights There was no wagon option available leaving Subaru’s Outback B6A variant to fill the role of Subaru’s flagship family wagon. Subaru currently has no plans for a replacement for the Liberty sedan instead opting to promote their G5 Impreza sedan with new increased cabin size.
