Subaru Models of Australia

Subaru vehicles have been sold in Australia since the 1960’s through direct imports, but it wasn’t until 1973 that Subaru had an official dealership network in Australia. Starting with the “A” series front wheel drive models they eventually branched out into 4wd models in the late 1970’s with manual 4wd select. 1979 saw the introduction of low range 4wd in some models as well as 4wd automatic transmission in the Touring Wagon. In the mid 1980’s, constant 4wd was introduced in the Subaru range. In 1989 Subaru released the Legacy, also known as the Liberty in Australia, with both front wheel drive and constant 4wd options available. The Subaru Liberty became Subaru’s flagship family car. The Subaru Impreza was released in 1993, including the rally bred WRX. In 1996, the Outback crossover variant of the Liberty with higher ground clearance for off road use was introduced. The multi award winning Subaru Forester was released in 1997, Subaru’s first SUV 4wd of its’ own design. 2006 saw the introduction of the Subaru Tribeca family SUV 5-seater / 7-seater with a 6-cylinder engine, designed and built in the U.S.A. In 2009 the Subaru Exiga 6-seater was the next family car to be released, marketed in Australia as the “Liberty Exiga”. The XV, first sold in 2010, was given is own model designation in 2012 with lots of upgrades such as CVT Transmission and the all new FB20 engine. That same year saw the launch of the sporty Subaru BRZ, which was a joint collaboration with Toyota (86 sports coupe), it wasn’t to be the only joint venture between the two car manufacturers. The rally conquering WRX finally separated from its’ Impreza heritage in 2014 and became a model in its’ own right with an entirely new body design. Initially released only in the sedan body style but was soon followed by a station wagon variant, marketed as the “Levorg”. 2019 was the end for Subaru’s flagship family car, the Liberty, with the new Impreza taking over having more cabin space than previous models. The Subaru Outback 2024 edition saw the 3.6L engine replaced by the 2.4L FA24 turbo. 2024 also saw the release of Subaru’s all electric 4wd Solterra, another joint collaboration with Toyota.
